Stepwell
A rare zone with a huge square well cut into the land. Terraces and stairs lead down to a still pool.
The Stepwell is a zone type in the Overworld. Somewhere in the zone the land is cut open by one huge square well.
What it looks like
- The well is a square 49 to 65 blocks wide. Its sides fall in terraces, each 4 blocks wide and 4 blocks deep.
- At the bottom is a small pool of still water, 3 blocks deep.
- Zig-zag stairs, one block per step, run down all four sides.
- On some sides a doorway at the foot of a terrace wall opens into a gallery. It runs back under the terraces to a dark chamber near the rim. Monsters spawn there.
- From above you see squares inside squares, the stairs and the water.
The rest of the zone is ordinary land. The well is cut and filled so that nothing leaks into it.
By biome
The blocks are the ones the local biome makes on its own, so the well looks different from place to place. In a desert it is sandstone. In a badlands it is striped terracotta. At sea it is prismarine. Elsewhere it is the local stone. Where two biomes meet, the well changes there.
Finding it
You find a Stepwell by seeing it: a chunk counts when it holds the well or its ring.
How rare it is
The Stepwell is a rare zone, about one zone in 360. It exists in the Overworld only, and only in land generated after the beta release. The land around spawn never gets it, so go far.
See Chunk errors for every zone type, and Exploring for how finds are logged.
The zones page shows who found it first.
