Floating Canopy

A common zone of floating cubes of leaves in geometric patterns over clean ground.

The Floating Canopy is a zone type in the Overworld. It is the Valley of Water made of leaves. Over clean ground, cubes of leaves hang in the air in a repeating pattern.

What it looks like

  • The cubes line up with the chunk grid, like the water cubes of the Valley of Water. Their sizes and patterns are the same.
  • Each block of a cube takes the leaves of the trees that grow in the biome under it, so a cube over a birch forest is birch leaves.
  • The leaves are persistent. They never decay, and they stay when nothing holds them.
  • The ground under the cubes is clean, with no other errors.

Where a cube crosses a biome border, it is two kinds of leaves in one cube.

By biome

Biome Cube block
Plains, forest, swamp, meadow Oak leaves
Birch forests, flower forests Birch leaves
Taigas, snowy plains, groves, windswept hills Spruce leaves
Jungles Jungle leaves
Savannas Acacia leaves
Dark forests Dark oak leaves
Pale gardens Pale oak leaves
Mangrove swamps Mangrove leaves
Cherry groves Cherry leaves
Lush caves Azalea leaves
Deserts and beaches Sandstone
Badlands Terracotta, in bands
Snowy slopes, jagged peaks, ice spikes, frozen peaks Snow block
Mushroom fields Red mushroom blocks

Where a biome has no trees and no block on the list, such as over open water, nothing hangs.

Dangers

The cubes are high up, at least 7 blocks over the ground. They are solid. You can walk on them and dig into them. Leaves do not drop or rot, so a cube is a safe place to build.

How rare it is

The Floating Canopy is a common zone, a little rarer than most: about one zone in 56. It exists in the Overworld only, and only in land generated after the 1.7.0 update. The land around spawn never gets it, so go far.

See Chunk errors for every zone type, and Exploring for how finds are logged.
