Catacombs
A rare Nether zone. A maze of black stone passages runs through the whole zone, with burial halls lit by fire.
Catacombs is a zone type in the Nether. One maze of black stone passages runs through the whole zone at one level, through rock and across the caverns.
What it looks like
- The passages are 2 blocks wide and 3 tall, lined with polished blackstone bricks (some cracked) on a grid of 8, 10 or 12 blocks. About a quarter of the stretches are missing.
- Over the caverns the passages run as black tubes through the open air.
- At about one crossing in five there is a burial hall, 6 by 6 blocks, lit by fire in its corners. The fire follows the biome: soul fire on soul soil in soul sand valleys, fire on magma in the wastes and deltas, shroomlight in the forests.
- The passages are sealed. Only the burial halls open onto open air, and that is where you get in.
- Nothing is built near the lava sea.
Dangers
It is a maze, and the Nether's monsters spawn in the dark parts. Do not lose your way back to a hall.
How rare it is
Catacombs is a rare zone, about one zone in 150 Nether zones. It exists in the Nether only, and only in land generated after the beta release. The Nether around spawn never gets it, so go far.
See Chunk errors for every zone type, and Exploring for how finds are logged.
The zones page shows who found it first.
