Backrooms

A common zone with endless low rooms under the ground, built from the local stone. Hatches with ladders lead down.

The Backrooms is a zone type in the Overworld. The land on top looks normal. Under it, one level of rooms runs under the whole zone.

What it looks like

  • The rooms are low, three blocks from floor to ceiling.
  • The walls, floor and ceiling are the stone of the place. Under most land they are smooth stone and polished andesite. Under deserts and warm oceans they are sandstone, the old yellow look. Under badlands they are red sandstone with a yellow terracotta floor, under snowy land polished diorite with a blue ice ceiling, and under swamps, jungles and lush caves mud brick.
  • The ceiling has a lit panel in the middle of each room. Some panels are out.
  • The walls stand on a grid and have doorways. The rooms join into a maze with no landmarks. In places the walls stop and only pillars are left.
  • The rooms are lit, so monsters do not spawn in them.

The level has a floor and a ceiling everywhere, and a wall where the zone ends. Where a ravine or the sea floor dips below it, the rooms run straight across as a floating slab.

Getting in

Here and there a square hatch is set in the ground: a frame of the wall stone around a hole with a ladder in it. The ladder goes down to the rooms. About one chunk in six has a hatch.

You can also dig down. The level sits at one height in each zone, somewhere between y 8 and y 28.

How rare it is

The Backrooms is a common zone. About 3 percent of zones are Backrooms. It exists in the Overworld only.

There are no other chunk errors inside the zone.

See Chunk errors for every zone type.
