Exploring
How zones are found and logged. /zones, tiers, first finds and the zones page. Never any coordinates.
The world is split into zones, each about 1,500 blocks across. Most zones are chunk errors. Some are special: floating cubes of water, an empty city, a cavern under a thin crust, a hall of basalt in the Nether, door frames over the void in the End. Each special zone type has a tier that says how rare it is.
Nothing marks a zone on a map. The server never gives coordinates, directions or distances to one. You find zones by travelling.
Tiers
| Tier | Colour | How rare | Rough travel per zone of one kind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Common | grey | about 1 zone in 30 | 30 to 40 km |
| Uncommon | green | about 1 zone in 100 | about 120 km |
| Rare | aqua | about 1 zone in 350 | about 400 km |
| Legendary | gold | about 1 zone in 2,000 | about 2,000 km |
Rough travel is how far you go in a straight line, on average, before you cross one zone of a given kind. Luck changes it a lot. There are several kinds in each tier, so you meet some common zone every few kilometres.
There are 19 zone types: 15 in the Overworld, 1 in the Nether and 3 in the End. New zone types such as Viaducts, Labyrinth or Overcast appear only in land far from anything that existed when they were added. The land around spawn never gets them, so go far. They are a little rarer than their tier: Viaducts, Labyrinth, Colonnade and Lampfield about 1 zone in 36, Overcast and Gridwalk about 1 in 105.
The Nether and the End have zones of their own, and their rarity counts the zones of that dimension only. The Nether has Ashfall, rare, about 1 Nether zone in 150. The End has Doorways, common, about 1 End zone in 23; Concourse, uncommon, about 1 in 76; and Orrery, rare, about 1 in 251. They too appear only in new land, far from anything that existed when they were added. End zones are only in the outer End, never near the main island.
See Chunk errors for every zone type and its page.
Finding a zone
- You find a zone by being in it. Walking, riding and flying over it all count.
- The first time you enter a zone type, you get a private line, for example "You found the Poolrooms. 3 of 19 zones." Each zone type counts once. The calm zone counts as a zone type too.
- Only land made while the zone log is running counts.
- Spectators do not find zones.
/zones
/zones (also /explore) shows your log:
- how many zone types you have found
- a block for each dimension, the Overworld, the Nether and the End, each with its count and its zone types, common first
- for a zone you found: a ✔, the day you found it, and the first player on the server to find it
- for a zone you have not found: ??? and the tier
Your log is yours alone. Nobody can look up another player's log.
Announcements
- The first find of each zone type on the server is announced to everyone, for example "First on the server: qdbq found the Hollow."
- Rare and legendary finds are announced too, the first time each player finds that zone.
- Common and uncommon finds stay private.
- If your /stats is private, other players see "a player" instead of your name.
On the website
The zones page lists every zone type, whether anyone has found it yet, who found it first and on what day, and how many players have found it. A chart shows how rare each type is, and a list shows the top explorers.
Names appear only for players whose /stats is public. The page shows days, never times or places.
What is never shown
- coordinates, directions or distances to a zone
- where you were when you found it
- your log, to anyone but you
