Chunk Seams

A common zone of clean land cut by 2-block gaps along chunk borders, with drops of 60 to 70 blocks.

Chunk Seams is a zone type in the Overworld. The land is ordinary, but the borders between some chunks are cut open.

What it looks like

  • The terrain is clean vanilla land.
  • Along the border of a pattern chunk there is a gap 2 blocks wide. It is the outer column of each chunk, so the two chunks no longer touch.
  • The gaps are straight lines that follow the chunk grid and run for as far as the pattern does.
  • A gap goes from the top of the world down to the bottom, to y 0. On land of normal height that is a drop of 60 to 70 blocks. The walls are the land's own terrain, so they show caves and ore.
  • The pattern is centred on one point in the zone, and it is one of: grid, checker, diagonals, rings, stairs, wave or towers.

Seams are only cut on dry land, well above the sea. They never cut through water and do not run along shores. Where a seam would reach a lake or a beach, it stops and the ground is whole.

Dangers

  • A seam is a long drop. It is only 2 blocks wide, so it is easy to walk into in the dark or at speed.
  • Sprinting or flying low across a zone, you can fall in without seeing it.
  • Cave mobs can come up through the walls.

A seam can be bridged with a plank or two. Anything built across it holds.

How rare it is

Chunk Seams is a common zone, a little rarer than most: about one zone in 55. It exists in the Overworld only, and only in land generated after the 1.7.0 update. The land around spawn never gets it, so go far.

There are no other chunk errors inside the zone.

See Chunk errors for every zone type, and Exploring for how finds are logged.
