Overcast

An uncommon zone with a flat stone sheet over the land. Under it, it is night all day.

Overcast is a zone type in the Overworld. A flat sheet of stone hangs over the whole zone, high above the ground, and shuts out the sky.

What it looks like

  • The sheet is one block thick and sits at the same height across the whole zone, far above the trees.
  • Where hills and mountains are taller than the sheet, they pass through it.
  • Pale lights hang under it in a grid. They light the sheet, not the ground.
  • In some zones, square pillars stand in a wide grid and reach up to it. They do not stand in water.
  • From outside, it is a dark band across the sky with a straight edge. From above, it is a flat, empty plain.

The sheet is only added on top of the land. No ground is dug out.

By biome

The sheet is built from blocks that fit the land under it.

Under it

  • Away from its edge, no daylight reaches the ground. At noon it is as dark as a cave.
  • The dark can hide lava pools on the ground. Watch where you walk.
  • Monsters spawn day and night. Zombies and skeletons do not burn in the morning.
  • No rain falls under it. Where it snows, the snow lies on top of the sheet, so the ground under it stays bare and water under it does not freeze.
  • Trees, flowers and tall grass do not grow under it. The ground is bare.

To get on top, climb a mountain that passes through it, build up, or fly.

How rare it is

Overcast is an uncommon zone. About 1 percent of zones are Overcast, about one zone in 105. It exists in the Overworld only, and only in land far from anything that existed when it was added. The land around spawn never gets it, so go far.

There are no other chunk errors inside the zone.

See Chunk errors for every zone type, and Exploring for how finds are logged.
