Ashfall
A rare Nether zone. One vast, dead hall of basalt pillars, lit by soul fire.
Ashfall is a zone type in the Nether. The whole zone is one hall. It is quiet, dark and very large.
What it looks like
- A flat floor and a flat ceiling, 48 to 64 blocks apart.
- Square pillars of polished basalt stand on a grid across the hall. Each has a plinth at its foot and a capital of smooth basalt under the ceiling.
- Some pillars have broken off. Only a stump is left.
- Soul fire burns on soul soil in the middle of each square between the pillars. It is the main light.
- Grey drifts of smooth basalt lie on the floor like ash.
- Gaps and lava under the floor and above the ceiling are filled with smooth basalt, so the lava sea under the hall is sealed. The natural rock stays.
- Where the zone ends, a wall of polished blackstone bricks closes the hall.
Getting in
The hall is sealed on every side: rock above and below, a wall at the edge, and no doors. Dig in, and dig out the same way.
By biome
The hall uses blocks that fit the Nether biome it stands in.
| Biome | Floor | Lines between pillars |
|---|---|---|
| Nether wastes | Polished blackstone bricks | Nether bricks |
| Soul sand valley | Soul soil | Polished basalt |
| Basalt deltas | Polished blackstone | Polished basalt |
| Crimson forest | Nether bricks | Red nether bricks |
| Warped forest | Polished blackstone bricks | Polished blackstone |
In crimson and warped forests, a shroomlight hangs in the ceiling above each fire. In warped forests it is set in warped wart.
In basalt deltas, pools of lava and magma lie on the floor, as everywhere in the deltas. Fortresses and bastions can stand in the hall.
Mobs spawn as they do in the rest of the biome. The hall itself has no loot and nothing worth mining.
How rare it is
Ashfall is a rare zone. About 0.6 percent of Nether zones are Ashfall, about one zone in 150. It exists in the Nether only, and only in Nether land far from anything that existed when it was added. The Nether around spawn never gets it, so go far.
There are no other chunk errors inside the zone.
See Chunk errors for every zone type.
