Causeway

A common Nether zone. Rows of basalt columns step down across the lava sea and sink into it.

Causeway is a zone type in the Nether. Rows of basalt columns stand in the lava sea, all running the same way. Each column is a little lower than the one before it, until the last one is level with the lava and the row sinks.

What it looks like

  • Each column is three blocks square. A one-block gap of lava lies between one column and the next.
  • A row starts with a tall column, 13 to 41 blocks over the lava, and steps down one or two blocks per column.
  • After the row sinks there is a short stretch of open lava, then the row starts again with a tall column. The next run can face the other way.
  • In one zone, all rows run the same way, 12 to 28 blocks apart. Some columns are missing, so the rows are broken.
  • Columns stand only in open lava. Where a row meets a shore, a ledge or the ceiling, it stops there and goes on beyond.
  • Each column goes down through the lava to the bottom.
  • Nothing is lit except by the lava.

The columns are only added into lava and air. No rock is dug out.

Using them

A row is a path over the lava that only goes down. Where it drops one block per column, you can walk it both ways, jumping each gap. Where it drops two, you can only go down. Every row ends in lava.

Mobs spawn as they do in the rest of the biome. The zone has no loot and nothing worth mining.

How rare it is

Causeway is a common zone. About 6.7 percent of Nether zones are Causeway, about one zone in 15. It exists in the Nether only, and only in Nether land far from anything that existed when it was added. The Nether around spawn never gets it, so go far.

There are no other chunk errors inside the zone.

See Chunk errors for every zone type.
