Lava Cubes

A rare Nether zone of still lava cubes floating over open space.

Lava Cubes is a zone type in the Nether. It is the Valley of Water with lava. Cubes of still lava hang in the air over the Nether's open space, in one repeating pattern per zone.

What it looks like

  • The cubes are 12 blocks wide, 8 blocks wide, or four of 6, in the same patterns as the Valley of Water.
  • They float at y 50 to 109.
  • A cube only stands over open space. Below it there is nothing but air down to the lava sea, or to rock that lava can't burn. Cubes that would sit against the land are left out.
  • The lava is still. The land around and under the cubes is as it was.

Dangers

Don't touch a cube. A touched cube pours down, and the lava falls all the way to the floor. Ghast fireballs can set cubes off too. Don't stand under one.

How rare it is

Lava Cubes is a rare zone. About 0.65 percent of Nether zones are Lava Cubes, about one zone in 155. It exists in the Nether only, and only in land generated after 1.7.0. The land around spawn never gets it, so go far.

See Chunk errors for every zone type, and Exploring for how finds are logged.
