Viaducts

A common zone where stone roads on tall arches cross the land in straight lines and lead nowhere.

Viaducts is a zone type in the Overworld. Stone roads on tall arches cross the zone in straight lines, high above the ground. Nothing travels on them.

What it looks like

  • The roads run north to south and east to west on a wide grid. They never turn.
  • Each road is five blocks wide, with a low wall on each side. All roads in a zone are at the same height, high over the land.
  • Piers stand about every 24 blocks, with round arches between them. Over lakes and the sea, the piers stand on the bottom.
  • Where two roads cross there is an open square. At most crossings a ladder climbs the pier at one corner.
  • Froglights are set in the walls every 16 blocks, on alternate sides.
  • Where a hill is taller than a road, the road stops at the hillside and starts again on the far side. There is no tunnel.
  • At the edge of the zone, the roads stop in mid-air.

The roads are only added on top of the land. No ground is dug out under them.

By biome

The roads are built from blocks that fit the land they cross.

Land Walls, piers and arches Road
Most of the world Stone bricks Polished andesite
Deserts and warm seas Cut sandstone Smooth sandstone
Badlands Cut red sandstone Smooth red sandstone
Snowy land and frozen seas Stone bricks Polished diorite
Swamps and jungles Mud bricks Packed mud

Using them

The roads are ordinary blocks with no protection. You can walk, ride or fly along them, and build on them. There are no ramps. The ladders at the crossings and the hills the roads run into are the ways up.

How rare it is

Viaducts is a common zone. About 3 percent of zones are Viaducts, about one zone in 36. It exists in the Overworld only, and only in land far from anything that existed when it was added. The land around spawn never gets it, so go far.

There are no other chunk errors inside the zone.

See Chunk errors for every zone type, and Exploring for how finds are logged.
