Kaleidoscope

A common zone where every chunk is mirrored into itself. The land repeats in patterns.

kaleidoscope from above: each chunk mirrored down its middle

Kaleidoscope is a zone type in the Overworld. Every chunk in it is symmetric.

What it looks like

The terrain starts clean, then each chunk is folded onto itself. Hills, valleys, caves and shores become mirror images inside every 16 by 16 chunk. From a distance the land breaks into tiles that repeat.

Each kaleidoscope zone uses one kind of symmetry everywhere:

  • a four-way mirror, so all four quarters of a chunk match
  • a mirror down the middle of the chunk
  • a mirror across the chunk's diagonal
  • a four-fold turn, like a pinwheel

Trees, ores and structures are placed after the mirror, so they are not symmetric.

How rare it is

Kaleidoscope is a common zone. About 3 percent of zones are kaleidoscopes. It exists in the Overworld only.

There are no other chunk errors inside the zone.

See Chunk errors for every zone type.
