Petrified Wave

A mythic zone. One ocean wave 150 blocks tall, turned to rock as it breaks.

Petrified Wave is a zone type in the Overworld. One huge wave runs across the zone, frozen in rock in the moment it curls over and breaks.

What it looks like

  • The wave is about 150 blocks tall from the trough to the crest.
  • Behind the crest a long smooth back slopes down into the sea or the land, a few hundred blocks long.
  • In front, the lip curls over and hangs down, so the wave is hollow inside: a round tube about 100 blocks high and wider than that.
  • The crest runs straight across the zone, along one axis, with a slow bend.
  • Toward both ends of the zone the wave gets smaller and the lip pulls back, so the tube opens up and the wave sinks away before the zone ends.
  • The outside of the wave is a different block from the inside. The lip, the top of the crest and thin bands across the face are a third block, like foam.

What it is made of

The blocks come from the biome the wave stands in, column by column, and are all blocks that biome makes on its own. Where the wave crosses from one biome into another, its blocks change there. Its shape does not.

  • Most land: polished tuff outside, stone bricks on the crest, cobblestone inside.
  • Snowy land: stone bricks outside, cobblestone inside. On snowy plains the outside is smooth stone.
  • Desert: smooth sandstone outside, sandstone crest and inside.
  • Badlands: terracotta in coloured bands outside, white terracotta crest, red sandstone inside.
  • Swamps and mangrove swamps: mossy stone bricks outside, stone bricks on the crest, mossy cobblestone inside.
  • Jungles: mud bricks outside, mossy stone bricks on the crest, mossy cobblestone inside.
  • Oceans, deep ones too: prismarine outside and on the crest, stone bricks inside.

There is no ice in it of any kind, and no ore. Nothing in it falls and nothing in it flows.

The tube

  • The floor of the tube is flat rock just above the sea. In front of it the floor ramps down into the water.
  • You can walk in under the lip through the mouth, the gap between the lip and the floor, and walk the length of the tube.
  • Where the wave crosses land higher than its floor, the land pokes up into the tube as it is.
  • There are no lights. The tube is dark inside away from the mouth, and monsters spawn there.

Where it stands

The wave is only added into open air and water. It never removes land, trees, buildings or caves. Over the sea it fills the water under it down to the sea floor. Where land rises higher than the wave, the land comes through it. Where the edge of the zone crosses the wave's back or front, the wave is cut off flat.

How rare it is

Petrified Wave is a mythic zone, rarer than any legendary one. About 0.01 percent of zones are Petrified Waves, about one zone in 10,000. It exists in the Overworld only, and only in land far from anything that existed when it was added. The land around spawn never gets it, so go far.

There are no other chunk errors inside the zone.
