Gridwalk
An uncommon zone where the land is gone. Only the chunk borders are left, as thin walls over the void.
Gridwalk is a zone type in the Overworld. The ground inside every chunk has been taken away, down through the bedrock. Only the edges of the chunks are left standing.
What it looks like
- Each chunk is an open square hole into the void, 14 blocks across.
- Between the holes, the chunk borders stand as walls two blocks thick. They reach from the bottom of the world up to the ground.
- The tops of the walls are the old ground: grass, sand, snow or stone. Together they form a grid that follows the shape of the land, up over hills and down into valleys.
- Over lakes and the sea, the walls rise to the surface of the water as cobblestone.
- The sides of the walls show the inside of the land in layers. Where stone, dirt or snow faces the void, it is cobblestone, cobbled deepslate, coarse dirt or polished stone.
- A pale light is set in the wall top where four chunks meet.
Water and lava inside the walls have been turned to cobblestone, and caves inside them are filled. Nothing flows out of the walls into the void.
Walking it
You can walk along the tops of the walls. They are two blocks wide. In hills they climb and drop with the land, so some stretches are steep. At the edge of the zone the last wall is one block wide, with ordinary land beside it.
Falling into a hole kills you. There is no floor and no bedrock under it, only the void. Anything you were carrying is lost.
On flat land the lights reach every wall top, so monsters do not spawn there. In hills some stretches are dark. Monsters from outside the zone can still walk in.
How rare it is
Gridwalk is an uncommon zone. About 1 percent of zones are Gridwalk, about one zone in 105. It exists in the Overworld only, and only in land far from anything that existed when it was added. The land around spawn never gets it, so go far.
There are no other chunk errors inside the zone.
See Chunk errors for every zone type, and Exploring for how finds are logged.
