Sky Chunks
A common zone where the top 16 to 32 blocks of the land are copied 48 blocks up into the air.
Sky Chunks is a zone type in the Overworld. The ground is whole. Above it, copies of the land hang in the sky.
What it looks like
- In the chunks picked by a pattern, the top 16 to 32 blocks of the land are copied 48 blocks higher. The ground stays where it is.
- The copy is a slab of the same hills, with the same grass, stone, trees and caves, hanging over the real land.
- Between the ground and the copy there is open sky.
- The pattern is centred on one point in the zone, and it is one of: grid, checker, diagonals, rings, stairs, wave or towers.
Nothing in the copy falls or flows. Water, lava and ice are left out. Sand turns to sandstone in deserts and red sand to red sandstone in badlands. Gravel becomes cobblestone, and ore becomes the rock around it.
Dangers
- The copy is high. Anything that falls from it falls a long way.
- Mobs spawn in the copy as they do on any land in the dark.
How rare it is
Sky Chunks is a common zone, a little rarer than most: about one zone in 63. It exists in the Overworld only, and only in land generated after the 1.7.0 update. The land around spawn never gets it, so go far.
See Chunk errors for every zone type, and Exploring for how finds are logged.
