Spans
An uncommon Nether zone. Everything above the lava sea is gone, and thin bridges cross the empty space.
Spans is a zone type in the Nether. Everything above the lava sea has been taken out, up to the bedrock roof. What is left is one empty space about 80 blocks high, crossed by thin bridges. It is quiet and dark. Most of the light comes from the lava below.
What it looks like
- The lava sea is still there. The land around it has been cut flat a few blocks above the lava.
- Above that there is only air, up to a flat ceiling right under the bedrock roof.
- Bridges of polished blackstone bricks cross the space in straight lines. Each is 3 blocks wide and 1 block thick, with no rails and nothing under it.
- Bridges run north to south and east to west. Each bridge has its own height. The bridges of one direction all pass above or below the bridges of the other, so no two bridges ever meet.
- Every bridge runs from one edge of the zone to the other and ends in the wall.
- Where the zone ends, a wall runs from the lava up to the ceiling.
Nothing hangs in the air. Caves and gaps under the cut floor are filled, so every block left stands on rock or on the lava. Lava never opens into the zone from the walls or the floor.
Getting around
There are no stairs or ladders. To get onto a bridge, build up to it, or dig through the wall at the edge of the zone where a bridge ends.
A fall from a bridge is about 20 to 70 blocks, onto flat rock or into the lava sea. Most falls kill you. If you land in the lava, everything you carry burns.
By biome
The floor, walls and ceiling use blocks that fit the Nether biome. The bridges are the same everywhere.
| Biome | Floor | Walls and ceiling |
|---|---|---|
| Nether wastes | Smooth basalt | Polished blackstone |
| Soul sand valley | Soul soil | Smooth basalt |
| Basalt deltas | Smooth basalt | Smooth basalt |
| Crimson forest | Crimson nylium | Polished blackstone |
| Warped forest | Warped nylium | Polished blackstone |
Ghasts and the other mobs of the biome spawn as anywhere in the Nether. Fortresses and bastions can stand in the zone, in the open space. The zone itself has no loot and nothing worth mining.
How rare it is
Spans is an uncommon zone. About 2 percent of Nether zones are Spans, about one zone in 48. It exists in the Nether only, and only in Nether land far from anything that existed when it was added. The Nether around spawn never gets it, so go far.
There are no other chunk errors inside the zone.
